What is DBT ( Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)?

DBT is based on 4 key Skills Building Components:

Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness


Core Mindfulness is the skill of learning how to control focus in the "Here and Now", to be present in what is being experienced.  Mindfulness allows greater focus, clarity, and control in building the other 3 Skills Components of DBT.

Distress Tolerance is the skill that allows individuals  to cope and manage distress with distraction during moments of increased emotion or crisis.

Emotion Regulation teaches individuals how to better identify,  label, and then manage negative and overwhelming feelings. This skill helps in decreasing emotional suffering while teaching how to feel and not avoid emotions,  and cope with them effectively.

Interpersonal Effectiveness teaches the skill of personal interactions (communication) that teaches how ask for help and reassurance, express needs appropriately, and to share feelings and thoughts in a manner that others can be receptive and able to respond to.
  
  

Who Can DBT Help?​

We work with adolescents (13+) and adults  who are challenged with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), suicidal ideations/thoughts, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety. Self injury and suicidal ideation are monitored weekly and safety plans and strategies are developed and adjusted regularly to help you or your loved one stay safe while learnig to manage the symptoms, feelings, and behaviors.

DBT skills are taught and practiced in session, and strategized to determine how to apply in your daily environment and within relationships. As skills are introduced and applied to daily life, brief Phone Coaching is implemented, when necessary, to help determine and use the proper skill for the immediate situation.

Treatment may be necessary for 6 months to over a year, based on the severity of symptoms. DBT is a proven effective therapy, and a commitment to ongoing participation is necessary for best results. Sessions are 50  minutes long, and take place weekly. For those wanting greater time to learn and practice skills in session, 75 minute weekly sessions are also available.
